Motivation to Lose Weight

Deciding that you want to lose weight and get in shape is the easiest part of the journey towards a happier, healthier you. However, finding the motivation to stick to the journey and to stay on course is a completely different story.

More often than not, what causes us to fail in our efforts at weight loss is the setting of unreasonable goals and a lack of motivation to follow through on them.

Some of us have a lot of weight to lose, and that can make the journey seem as though it has no end. If you look at it in that light, you are setting yourself up for failure.

You have to believe that you can manage or you are far less likely to actually succeed. Having this motivation to lose weight does not come naturally. Understanding this is one of the most powerful weight loss tips.

It is easy to get discouraged. You are fighting lifelong bad habits and may have a long journey ahead of you.

Mindset is incredibly important as a positive mindset and feeling confident that we can do anything will push us to do things we never thought possible.

A defeatist mindset will mean that, the first time you slip up – and you will likely slip up – you are more likely to give up, “pack in all up”, and resign yourself to a life of being overweight, unhappy, and unhealthy.

It takes work and effort to stay positive and to instill and maintain that motivation to lose weight it takes to have a chance at success.


Set a Series of Small, Realistic Goals

Most of us expect too much, too fast. You are not going to go from couch potato to beach babe overnight, no matter how much you wish it so.

It took years to put the weight on, you should not expect it to come on in an instant. Realistic goal planning is incredibly important staying motivated to lose weight.

Setting yourself goals is imperative to getting to where you want to be. One needs to see milestones – ways in which they have made strides towards getting to their goal weight – in order to stay the course.

But these have to be realistic milestones. Making small, achievable, goals is part and parcel to success with long-term weight loss.


Celebrate Your Success

It takes a lot of effort and will to decide to make changes in your life. When you reach even the most seemingly insignificant milestone, it is important to at least give yourself a pat on the back for your effort.

Do not look at a situation where you have lost 10 pounds out of the total 100 you need to lose and think about how far you are from your goal. Think about the fact that you lost 10 pounds. That is 10 pounds gone that should be celebrated!


Try to See Slip Ups As a Learning Opportunity

There is a good chance after a rough day, or during a particularly hectic time, that you might slip a bit and go off your planned healthy eating schedule, or skip out on exercising.

Rather than being of the mindset that “well, I have already fallen off the bandwagon, I might as well declare this attempt a bust too”, see it as a learning experience.

Life is always going to throw us curve balls. There will be times when our schedules are hectic beyond belief or that we wish to seek emotional comfort in food.

But seeing these situations for what they are, picking yourself back up off the ground, and getting back on track is how you will keep that motivation to lose weight.
